Indexes & Abstracts

The Rod Library has purchased access to many electronic indexes, abstracts, and databases which cover a variety of disciplines. Most commonly used for art and music research are:

Information File

The Information File contains art, design, and music materials otherwise not available through the book or periodical collections. The contents include card reproductions of artwork related to local or state exhibits, grant application forms from various state and national art foundations and organizations, selected annual reports of galleries and museums, membership directories from professional associations, brochures, and newsletters.  These materials may be checked out for one week and renewed for an additional week.

Music Scores

The Library has over 15,000 scores, including orchestral, chamber music, vocal scores of operas and musical comedies, historical sets, and series of complete works of selected composers. These scores are located in the Library's general stacks collection on the fourth floor (northeast stacks). All scores are cataloged and may be identified through UNISTAR. The Mini-Scores Collection consists of scores that are 23 cm or less in height. They are shelved in a separate section following the MTs on the fourth floor. Most scores circulate for three weeks to undergraduate students.  Faculty and graduate students have an extended loans on these materials.

Reference

The Art & Music Collection contains its own reference section with more than 2,800 titles of specialized dictionaries, encyclopedias, thematic catalogs, auction records, directories, bibliographies, discographies, and other sources. For example, you may find information on the price paid for works of art by famous and not-so famous artists ( in International Auction Records) or the  title of the song that won an Emmy Award in 1985 (in Popular Music: An Annotated Guide to American Popular Songs...).  These materials may not be checked out.

Reserve Collection

Instructors may place course-related books, music scores, and sound recordings on reserve for their students. A maximum of 3 print items (including 8 sound recordings) related to a single class may be checked out at one time. Materials may be used within the library building for a period of two or three hours. Instructors may designate longer length of check out time.

Sound and DVD Recordings

The sound recording collection is comprised of over 13,000 titles on CDs and LPs. The collection contains classical music as well as works of jazz, musical comedy, folk, popular, and world music. The Art and Music Collection also maintains a subscription to the Naxos Music Library and Naxos Music Library Jazz audio streaming services which provide access to approximately 50,000 recordings. In addition to music, there are spoken word and sound effects recordings. The spoken word collection contains English and foreign languages and includes speeches and interviews of people in areas such as politics, architecture, and science. There is also a collection of DVDs which includes opera, conducting, music education, and various art topics.  Sound recordings circulate for three weeks with a one-week renewal.  DVDs circulate for one week with a one-week renewal.

Note:  Enhanced CDs can be played on Library audio equipment but cannot be used on Library computers, which will not permit installation of the necessary multimedia programs.  See Links to Music Resources for more information.
