Circulation Policies
General Circulation
Only those items which are normally housed in the Art and Music Collection may be checked out at the Art & Music Desk. These items include sound recordings, art and music DVDs and videos, and reserve items. Reference books and indexes/abstracts do not circulate. UNI students, faculty, staff, and persons holding a visitor card may borrow items from the library. Patrons must present their UNI ID card in order to check out materials.
Student Borrowing with a Faculty Member's ID Card
In some cases, faculty members may allow an office assistant or other student to borrow materials with the faculty member’s ID card. A student may do this one time with a letter. After presenting the letter, the student should be given a permission slip for the faculty member to sign. Permission slips may be obtained at the circulation desk on the second floor and should be returned there when complete. The student should present his or her own UNI ID for checkout, not faculty member's ID.
Equipment
Listening Rooms
Listening Rooms may be used for three hours at a time by persons holding valid UNI ID or visitor cards. Room 455 may be reserved in advance by a faculty member for either his/her own use, class use, or on his/her behalf for a group of students. Students may not reserve listening rooms. Groups of two or more have priority over single users in the listening rooms; a student listening by him/herself may be asked to relinquish the room for a group’s use. Patrons may bring their own material for use in the listening room or in the listening area at the rear of the library. Patrons using library material have priority in the use of all equipment.
Headphones
Headphones may be checked out for three hours and used with the listening equipment in the Art & Music Collection. Headphones may also be checked out and used with computers.
Collections
Sound Recordings
CDs and LPs may be borrowed at the Art & Music Desk for a period of 3 weeks. These items may be renewed for 1 week.
DVDs & Videos
DVDs and videos in the Art and Music Collection that are not booked may be borrowed for 7 days. If the item is booked and the booking date is more than 7 days away, the item may be borrowed for 7 days. If the booking date is less than 7 days away, the DVD or video may be lent for fewer than 7 days. DVDs and videos may be renewed for one week.
Information File
Materials in the Information File may be borrowed for one week with a one-week renewal. A list of the subjects included in the file is available online.
Reserve Collection
Materials relating to courses in art or music may be placed on reserve in either the Art & Music Collection or at the Multi-Service Center on the first floor, as the professor deems appropriate. Materials circulate for either two hours or three days, at the discretion of the professor. Students may check out up to 3 reserve materials and 8 sound recordings at one time. Reference books are not placed on reserve.
General Art & Music Collection Policies
Large Groups or Disruptive Patrons
Large groups of patrons or individuals studying in the Art and Music Collection who are noisy or disruptive may be asked to move to a library study room.
Policy on Patrons Sleeping in Rod Library
Patrons sleeping in the Rod Library may be awakened by Library faculty, staff, and student assistants in instances when their behavior is interfering with, or detracting from, use of Library facilities and services by other patrons, or by Library faculty, staff and student assistants. In areas where this patron behavior poses recurrent problems, signs may be posted which read "Patrons who are sleeping in this area will be awakened by Library staff. " Library faculty, staff, and student assistants should avoid touching patrons when awakening them.
Challenges of Library Material
Patrons challenging art or music library materials in Rod Library should contact the Art and Music Collection librarian at 273-6257. If the librarian is unavailable, please contact the Head of Collection Management and Special Services at 273-7255.
Suggestions for Additions to the Collection
Suggestions for additions to the Art and Music collection may be submitted directly to the Art and Music librarian or through UNISTAR, the Library's online card catalog.
