Stageberg Collection

The Stageberg Collection was donated to the Rod Library under the terms of the will of Norman C. Stageberg, long-time professor in the UNI Department of English Language and Literature, who died in 1984. This collection, focused on linguistics and language, includes a substantial number of old, rare, and valuable titles. However, most of the 1,250 volume collection is composed of twentieth century monographs, dictionaries, and essays. The primary function of the Stageberg Collection is to provide students and faculty with a professional linguistics reference collection with a special strength in historical linguistics.

Norman C. StagebergNorman Stageberg joined the UNI faculty in 1946 as Assistant Professor of English. He retired in 1972 with the rank of professor, which he achieved in 1960.

Professor Stageberg was born April 7, 1905, at Owatonna, Minnesota. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in 1926, a Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1932, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1946.

StagebergBefore coming to UNI, Stageberg was a teacher at Valley Springs, Minnesota, from 1926 through 1929, and the head of the English department at Faribault, Minnesota, High School from 1929 through 1939. From 1942 through 1946 he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He again served in the military from 1951 through 1953 with the Air Force as an instructor at Air University and the University of Alabama.

Teaching EnglishStageberg founded the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program at UNI. The program was offered to students beginning in the spring of 1964. The partial pamphlet to the right announces and describes the new TEFL program in 1963.

He led the Modern Language Department in its infancy, and was a recognized scholar and author in literature, grammar, ambiguity, and meaning.
