College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Subject Files, 1968-2003. 7.5 linear feet.

Papers

This collection provides a good look at the work of the office of the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, especially from about 1985 through about 2000, but with some papers from earlier and later than those dates.  Deans Robert Morin, John Deegan, Aaron Podolefsky, and Jill Wallace administered the office during the period covered by this collection.

The collection looks both up and down the administrative ladder.  It includes documentation of the deans' responsilities to the Vice President and Provost as well as the deans' responsibilities to administer the departments of the college.

This collection is a good place to get a summary view of the work of the departments of the college: Geography, History, Home Economics (later Design, Family and Consumer Sciences), Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology and Anthropology (later Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology).  There are annual reports and long range planning reports for most of these department as well as extensive correspondence files.

There are very strong files relating to the development of the Master of Social Work and the Master of Public Policy programs, as well as good documention of the Women's Studies program.  This collection is also a source of information about the separation of business-related curricula from the former College of Business and Behavioral Sciences and the establishment of those curricula into a new college.  The collection also features information about space utilization by the college and about renovations of buildings in which the college and its departments have been located.  Documentation of some departments is stronger and wider than for others. Included with material related to the Department of Geography, for example, is documentation of the Geographical Alliance of Iowa and of the local journal, Geographical Perspectives.  Documentation for the Department of Home Economics is also strong due to its accreditation processes and to its attempts to refocus its curriculum into what became the Department of Design, Family and Consumer Sciences.

This collection came to the University Archives from the office of the Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences in December 2008, in anticipation of the renovation of Sabin Hall.
