Alison E. Aitchison

Alison E. Aitchison, Professor of Geography, Emeritus, died at home yesterday, January 5, 1964. Miss Aitchison was born August 28, 1874, in Kankakee, Illinois. She attended the Iowa State Normal School (now SCI) in 1903. In 1907 and 1931, she earned the B. S. and M. S. degrees from the University of Iowa and Chicago, respectively. She began her work on this campus as a critic in training in the campus high school; was appointed to the faculty in 1903; and became emeritus in 1944.

Miss Aitchison was one of three faculty members to receive the award for effective and inspiring instructional service at the 1939 spring Commencement. In 1945, the Distinguished Service Award of the National Council of Geography Teachers was also bestowed on Miss Aitchison. She was the author and co-author of six books on geography. She was local and state president of the American Association of University Women and past president of the Faculty Women's Club. In addition, she was a founding member of the College Hill Interdenominational Church and was a member of Chapter FV-PEO of this area. This college and this community appreciate the services rendered by Miss Aitchison whose time, money, and talents were all extended most generously to her colleagues and fellow citizens.

Miss Aitchison leaves to mourn her one brother, William, of California, and Grace, her sister, at home.

Dr. Harold E. Bernhard will officiate at the memorial service to be held Wednesday, January 8, 1964, at 2:00 p.m., Dahl's Funeral Home. The flag will be lowered to half-mast during the service and the Campanile will be played at 1:50 p.m., Wednesday, as an expression of respect and admiration for Miss Aitchison.
