Clyde L. Starbeck

Clyde Starbeck

Clyde "Buck" Starbeck coached the UNI football team from 1936 through 1957, including a ten-year winning streak beginning in 1939.  In addition to his football duties, he also coached the 1958 wrestling team.  From 1936 through 1945 Starbeck was an instructor in Physical Education for Men.  When he died in 1957, his rank was Assistant Professor.

Starbeck was born January 7, 1900, at Montevideo, Minnesota.  He graduated from high school in 1920.  In 1927 he received his Bachelor of Science degree from South Dakota State College, where he majored in history and the biological sciences.  His first position after graduating was at Pipestone Indian School in Pipestone, Minnesota, where he served as coach and boys' counselor from 1921 to 1923.  From 1927 to 1928 he was the director of physical education and coach at Eau Claire High School.  The following year he began work as coach and Assistant Director of Athletics at North Dakota University.  He remained in that position until coming to the Iowa State Teachers College (later UNI) in September 1936.

Starbeck died December 21, 1957 after suffering a heart attack.
