Thelma A. Short

Thelma A. Short, Assistant Professor of Physical Education for Women, died Friday, 11 January 1974, at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Her death was attributed to a long illness and complications following surgery.

Miss Short was born at Wichita, Kansas, on 11 October 1895. She graduated from high school in Salina, Kansas in 1914, and received the B. S. degree in 1921 and her M. A. in 1929, both from Teachers College, Columbia University. She taught in public schools in Topeka, Kansas; at the YWCA in Detroit, Michigan; was Director of Physical Education for Women at Nebraska State Teachers College in Chadron, Nebraska, before joining the staff of the University of Northern Iowa in 1929. In 1932-33, while on leave from UNI, she served for one year as Director of Physical Education for the Teachers College at Bellingham, Washington.

Miss Short was a member of the American Camping Association, the Iowa State Education Association, the National Education Association, and the American Physical Education Association. She served on a number of committees and study groups for these organizations.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church at 9th and Main at 11 A.M. Her body has been donated to the University Hospital at Iowa City.

The flag will be flown at half mast during the time of the service and the Campanile bells will be played in memory of Miss Short.
