C. Hugh Pettersen Papers

Manuscript collection:  MsC-77
C. Hugh Pettersen papers, 1979-2005.  2.75 linear feet

C. Hugh Pettersen graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College in 1955.  Mr. Pettersen owned several long-time businesses--a haberdashery and an art gallery--on 23rd Street on College Hill adjacent to the University of Northern Iowa campus.  He was a supporter of the arts, a leader of the College Hill community, and the founder of the College Hill Arts Festival.

This collection includes correspondence, publications, records, programs, and photographs relating primarily to the College Hill community and the College Hill Arts Festival.  This collection can be used profitably in conjunction with the large collection of records from the College Hill Arts Festival itself, which is also housed in the University of Northern Iowa Archives.  Some of the material in Mr. Pettersen's collection duplicates material in the College Hill Arts Festival collection.  However, the Festival correspondence in Mr. Pettersen's collection sometimes offers a more personal and detailed view of Festival matters.

Mr. Pettersen was sometimes known as the unofficial mayor of College Hill.  Consequently, researchers interested in the College Hill neighborhood, including the business and professional community, from about 1980 through about 2005 will find the portion of Mr. Pettersen's collection relating to that community invaluable.  That portion of the collection is especially good at documenting ways in which the City of Cedar Falls worked with College Hill merchants and residents over the years.

Mr. Pettersen donated this material to the University Archives of the University of Northern Iowa in December 2011, shortly after he closed his College Hill business.
