Reserve Desk Faculty Information
Faculty must complete a reserve request form each time items are deposited at the Reserve Desk. The form gives detailed course/instructor information so that the course records can be entered accurately into UNISTAR. The student assistants handle the physical processing of the reserve items, and only permanent staff are granted access to create course records and bibliographic/item records for UNISTAR. It can take up to 20 minutes per item to completely process for reserves. Remember that reserve desk permanent staff only work 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please plan accordingly.
During the first two weeks of each semester, because of the large number of items coming in to the Reserve Desk, we guarantee that requested items will be processed within two weeks. For the rest of the semester, Reserve Desk staff can usually process most reserve requests within 24 hours. All reserve items are processed on a first come, first served basis. You will be notified when your list has been processed and the items are available for use. Please do not assign reserve readings prior to notification.
The Reserve Desk will place photocopies of items on reserve following the "fair use" provisions of the Federal Copyright Law. If a photocopy has already been placed on reserve once before for a course by an instructor, then copyright permission by the copyright holder is needed before it can be placed on reserve again. It is the responsibility of the faculty member to seek copyright permission for photocopies of items, which are not covered by the "fair use" provisions of Title 17, Section 107 of the Copyright Act. Written documentation of copyright permission is required to place items on reserve for material not covered by the "fair use" provisions. For the convenience of faculty members, however, UNI has provided a sample letter to request copyright permission as well as "How To" information.
