Accessing E-Resources from Off-Campus

Access to UNISTAR - BOOKS:

UNISTAR is the library catalog of Rod Library  which lists books, journals, and other materials owned by the library. To search UNISTAR, you will need to be at a computer with access to the Internet or at a computer.  To access UNISTAR from the Rod Library home page, click on the Books and Other Materials (UNISTAR) heading.

Access to Rod Library's Licensed Databases - ARTICLES:

In order to access Rod Library databases from your off-campus location using an Internet browser like Foxfire or Internet Explorer, you MUST go through the the Rod Library website.

There is a combination of free and licensed information located on the Library's website. In order to access the licensed databases, you must be a current UNI student. Try Panther Prowler which allows you to search several databases at one time for information on a topic (Panther Prowler User Guide.) If the article is not available in full text from the library database, click on the button to possibly find the full text of the item in another licensed resource. Search INDIVIDUAL databases when you need more POWER and PRECISION in your searching. Rod Library databases are located under the Databases A-Z link found under the Journal and Magazine Articles (Panther Prowler) heading.  Once on the Databases A-Z page, click on a database title to enter the database and to locate articles on a particular topic. NOTE: If you only check the box next to the database, you will still be using Panther Prowler and not searching in the database using the native search interface. For help in figuring out which databases to use for your topic, click on the by Field of Study link.

For more information related to remote access, go to the directions for Off-Campus Access into Library  Resources. When you first click on a licensed library database, you should receive an authentication screen that states "A password is required to use this resource" which prompts you for your Last Name and your ID Number (enter your 9 digit university identification number - 000###### with no spaces. The number is found on the front of your university ID card). The information you submit is checked against the library patron database and if a match is found; you are passed into the licensed resource.  You will be prompted for the "authentication" information at the beginning of EACH computer session.

If you encounter any difficulties, please contact Ellen Neuhaus at 1-866-207-9410 or by clicking on the online Contact/Request form.

Please keep in mind that most of these databases indicate where periodical articles on your research topic have been published and often include abstracts or summaries of the articles. Other databases provide other types of information, such as statistics, while yet others contain the full text of many articles. The Rod Library does not subscribe to all the periodicals that are indexed in these databases.
