Interlibrary Loan Information

Interlibrary loan is when a library borrows materials not owned by the library from another library. Books have to be returned to the lending library but articles are photocopied and don't have to be returned.

Articles

Rod Library will submit interlibrary loan requests for ARTICLES not owned by UNI subject to the U.S. Copyright Law. Once Rod Library receives the article, it will be sent electronically to the student whenever possible, otherwise the article will be mailed or faxed to the student.

UNI distance learners MUST request interlibrary loan articles through the library's distance learning services in order for the article to be sent to the student. Do NOT go through the library's on-campus interlibrary loan service since the library's interlibrary loan department doesn't send materials to UNI students. The interlibrary loan service usually takes between 10 days and 3 weeks to fill. You can complete the library's distance learning online article request form, fax (319-273-2913), contact the Distance Learning coordinator, or telephone (319-273-2838) the library with your request.

Books

If you want a BOOK not owned by Rod Library, please go to your local library and ask that they obtain the book through interlibrary loan. Rod Library does not interlibrary loan books for UNI distance learners. You can choose to use the library's on-campus interlibrary loan service for books not owned by Rod library but then you will have to travel to the library to pick up and to return the books. To submit an interlibrary loan request through the library's on-campus services you can complete an on-campus interlibrary loan request form. Dissertations and theses (other than from UNI) have to be obtained either from your local library or from Rod Library's on-campus interlibrary loan service because these items have to be returned to the lending institution.
