Rod Library subscribes to print editions of about
35
newspapers. Older issues of some of these newspapers are retained on microfilm back as far
as the 1800s. For a complete listing of newspapers received in print, see

-- Arranged by Title. Rod Library also subscribes to online versions of many newspapers through
services such as LexisNexis, NewsBank, and ProQuest. Coverage
goes back as far as 1980 in some cases. Finally, Rod Library provides links to numerous
newspaper web sites. In most cases, only recently published articles are available through
such sites.

The newspapers listed below are examples of these. For older issues of newspapers, please
keep in mind that many newspapers have gone through title changes so be sure to check for
a Continues or Cont'd (Continued by) by statement in the UNISTAR record.
This indicates previous or newer titles. The first two newspapers listed below are

regional newspapers. If a title is available on LexisNexis, some restrictions on
which articles are available full-text may apply. LexisNexis is available through the Rod Library
home page. Select Databases A-Z under Journal and
Magazine Articles (Panther Prowler).
Click on "Sources" on
the top bar of LexisNexis. Type in your title and then click on "Find
Title." Click on "About this Title" to examine any restrictions
which may apply.

| Recent newspapers may be browsed in the Newspaper Room located on the first floor behind the main staircase. Some newspapers and classified advertisements are located on the first floor at the MultiService Center's Periodicals desk. Past issues of some newspapers are available on microfilm on the first floor of the library in the Microforms Room. Microfilmed volumes/issues of newspapers are filed alphabetically by their title in the microform drawers. Check the Lib. Has (Library Has) statement in the UNISTAR record for your title to find out which volumes/issues the library has and which are on microfilm. |

from the alphabetical listing. This source has full-text articles from the Chicago
Tribune and the (Cedar Rapids) Gazette, and dozens of other newspapers from
around the country. Coverage of the Des Moines Register is
intermittent. Check the NewsBank site to see if it is currently indexing the Des
Moines Register. See the the Des Moines Register Index above for
alternative ways to access this title.

Journal)
Click on Databases A-Z (under Journal and Magazine Articles (Panther Prowler)) on the Rod Library home page. Select ProQuest from the alphabetical listing. You may then click on "Collections" at the top left of the ProQuest screen. Next, choose the Wall Street Journal.
| Searching Paper Indexes to Newspapers |
Newspaper index entries in paper indicate the contents, dates, and pages of the articles.
The year may not be given in the entry because the entire index issue covers a certain
year. Indexes commonly use the following form for an entry:
WATER POLLUTION. See also
Acid Rain
Underground pipeline used to transfer oil off ship docked near Puget Sound apparently
ruptures, leaking some 400,000 gallons of crude into drainage ditch (S),
Ja 7, B, 8:1
In the above citation,
WATER POLLUTION is the subject a user looked up.
Acid Rain is a closely related subject heading a user could
also use if desired.
(S) indicates a short article.
Ja 7 indicates the month and date on which the article
appeared.
B indicates the section in the newspaper in which the article
appears.
8: indicates the page within the section on which the article
appears
1 indicates in which column on the page the article starts.
