See: http://www.archives.gov/research/arc/topics/african-americans.html for search tips and sample keywords to use when searching ARC.  This site includes fugitive slave documents, Kentucky internment records, Tuskegee syphilis study records, 1940s sketches by Charles Alston.

Documenting the American South - University Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
This project includes "digitized primary materials that offer Southern perspectives on American history and culture."  One may browse the titles of the collections or look for specific authors, titles, subjects or geographic areas.

An annotated bibliography of African American periodicals published between 1827 and 1960.

Project Gutenberg - Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation
Search for the digitized versions of texts.  A search of, for example,  DuBois, W.E.B. as an author pulls up 7 digitized documents of his works. A search of "slavery" as a subject pulls up 9 books. Searching by author or title seems to work the best here as it is not clear from where the "subjects" are derived and the project's full-text searching is "experimental" and is currently indexing stop words such as "and".
