Demographic and Economic Data
Governments conduct censuses and surveys, and most results are available for public use. Many other types organizations, such as trade associations, also gather data; some may be available for no charge and without restriction, some may available only to members or for a fee.
U.S. Census Bureau American Factfinder (demographics)
- Produced by the U.S. Census Bureau, this site includes demographic and economic data from the population and economic censuses and surveys, for the U.S. as a whole, states, and smaller areas.

Lifestyle Market Analyst (UNI Reference HF5415.33.U6 L54 2007)
- Provides demographic and lifestyle profile of television markets in the U.S.: occupation, education, income, hobbies, sports activities, etc.
- Profiles more than 71 lifestyle interests, such as Attend Cultural/Art Events, showing demographic characteristics of households interested in particular lifestyles.
- Also profiles demographic groups such as Single Men, 18-34 in terms of geographic concentration and lifestyle interests.
Social Media
Various social media sites may contain useful commentary on products.
Articles in Trade Journals, Business Magazines and Newspapers, and Academic Journals
Rod Library subscribes to databases that index journals and magazines in various subject areas. The first four below index academic journals, trade journals, business magazines, and newspapers in various business areas.
Trade journals can be a major source for marketing data and intelligence for the industries and markets they cover. Some trade journal web site articles are free and some are not. Rod Library subscribes to all articles from certain trade journals, and they therefore are available to UNI employees and currently enrolled UNI students at no cost.

Other databases index articles in areas such as education, sports, and recreation and may be appropriate search tools for a given project. Through Panther Prowler, one can simultaneously search several databases in areas such as business, education, and music.

Articles about small or new companies may be found only in local publications, such as the following. Small, local companies also probably have websites and provide information about themselves there.

Evaluation and Citation of Business Sources
Conflicts between sources as to data or analysis should be considered in deciding whether to use them. If uncertain whether to use a particular website, consider factors such its scope, author qualifications, point of view, and other criteria.
Credit should be given to authors whose exact words and ideas are used. Different professors may require different style manuals, many of which are available at the Rod Library reference desk.
A copy of the Publication manual of the American Psychological Association, for example, is available in print at the Rod Library Reference Desk, as is a copy of the APA Style Guide to Electronic Resources. The APA style is summarized at this page.
The Chicago Manual of Style is also kept at the Rod Library Reference Desk. This quick guide from The Chicago Manual of Style Online provides tips on how to cite different types of publications.
The Library at UNC-Greensboro has done a nice summary of how to cite articles and documents from business databases like Mintel. For example, it recommends citing Mintel reports in APA style as follows:
