Learning Commons Update

November 28, 2012

Thanks to everyone for participating and giving input on the Learning Commons over the past few months! We are very excited about the changes to come and we know you are, too! We are currently compiling and analyzing all of the input we have received.  As soon as that is done, we will be sure to share our findings with you!  We do have information, articles, and other items of interest that can be found at our Learning Commons LibGuide: guides.lib.uni.edu/learning-commons   In addition, you can always send an e-mail to us at liblearningcommons@uni.edu or stop by the library and see the ongoing progress we have made!

Burning CDs or DVDs on Library Computers

November 28, 2012

Did you know...

that files can be burned to CDs or DVDs on Rod Library computers?  Use the built-in Windows functionality to handle a few files or the Roxio burning software (under All Programs) for bigger jobs.  If you get stuck, ask one of the library staff to help you!

Browsing Room Closed During Thanksgiving Break

November 16, 2012

The Browsing Room will be closed during Thanksgiving Break to allow the electrical contractors to replace the light fixtures in that space.

If you need a DVD or book from the Browsing Room during this time please see the helpful folks at the Circulation Desk.  They will be able to pull the items for you.

LexisNexis Academic Adds New Market and Industry Reports

November 14, 2012

The LexisNexis Academic database periodically adds and deletes titles. Over the last few months, for example, they added 143 titles and dropped 19. One of the new titles is Progressive Media's Market Industry Research. This is a collection of industry snapshots, covering markets and categories in 74 countries; one report example is Drinks Retailing in United States: Market Snapshot to 2016.

Progressive Media's Market Industry Research can be searched directly using a LexisNexis Academic search form.

November 7, 2012

Did you know.....

that the Gale Virtual Reference Library provides credible topic overviews from sources such as specialized subject encyclopedias?  You can find it by going to "Databases A-Z" on our library homepage.  You may hear some of us library guys refer to it as the "Good" Wikipedia you can use!!!

Too warm AND stuffy!!

November 6, 2012

Feeling a bit warm on the east side (the side toward Maucker Union) of the library?  A bit stuffy, too?  Our fans on that side of the building need to get repaired.  A major part of the motor was sent to Cedar Rapids for repair; if they can't fix it, we'll have to order a new one.  We can't predict when it will get fixed unfortunately.

So please bear with us!  If necessary, move to the back of the building toward the Campanile where we still have fans working.

Mixing It Up!

November 2, 2012

If you haven't noticed, we are mixing things up in the library!  If you look behind the Reference desk on the main floor, you will see what we have done.

  • Added a collaborative workstation
  • Six individual computers grouped around the pillars
  • Tables to study at
  • Casual seating (including neon pink chairs!)

This is a work in progress! We would like to hear your thoughts on what we have done so far! Please e-mail liblearningcommons@uni.edu with your comments
