Tell us what you want in the Learning Commons!

October 5, 2012

Rod Library, in partnership with other campus units, is seeking to develop space in the library building into a learning commons.  The learning commons will be a student-centered physical and virtual learning space designed for optimal learning in groups or individually.  The reconfigured space will be designed to be open, comfortable, inspirational, and practical.  This survey will help us gather information from the campus community (students, faculty, and staff) about technologies, services and furnishings that will meet the needs of 21st century learners and researchers.

The survey is available by clicking here.  You will be asked for your CatID to log in. The survey will be available from October 5th through October 19th.  Please feel free to contact the Learning Commons Task Force with any questions or comments at liblearningcommons@uni.edu

What is a Learning Commons?

September 14, 2012

In our earlier blog entry of the day, we asked for input from you on what you would like to see in our new Learning Commons area located behind the Reference desk on the 2nd (main) floor of Rod Library.  Below, the concept of the learning commons is explained.  We hope this will give you an understanding of what a learning commons is and what Rod Library hopes to do with it.

What is a Learning Commons?

The Learning Commons is a student-centered physical and virtual learning space designed under the guiding principles of openness, flexibility, comfort, inspiration, and practicality. It fosters collaborative and independent active learning by providing technology, resources, and services that help to engage students and faculty in the learning process. Through the Learning Commons the library will strive to create active partnerships with other university units that incorporate campus-wide goals and objectives.

The Learning Commons supports the Library’s goals to provide “high quality services responsive to the changing cultural, research, and informational needs of our community” and “functional, flexible, inviting, safe, technology-equipped learning spaces.”

The Learning Commons supports the mission of the University of Northern Iowa to provide “transformative learning experiences that inspire students to embrace challenge, engage in critical inquiry and creative thought, and contribute to society.”

Any questions or comments? Please e-mail them to us @ liblearningcommons@uni.edu
