Alvin W. Schindler

UNI's education building was named for Dr. Alvin W. Schindler because of his contributions to education. Schindler, born in Pulaski, Iowa, graduated from UNI with a degree in teaching in 1927. He earned both his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Iowa. He began his career in education as a teacher and superintendent in Iowa schools. Then he joined the faculty at the University of Denver where he stayed until accepting a professorship at the University of Maryland in 1943. There he developed the school's first education program. He retired from his position at Maryland in 1971. He died in 1987 at the age of 84.
