Other Archives and Manuscript Collections Sites

  • Iowa
    • The University of Iowa Library Special Collections Department [1] maintains strong collections on Lincoln, Leigh Hunt, railroads, and Iowa history.
    • The Iowa Women's Archives [2], located in the University of Iowa Library, maintains collections of material related to women's roles and achievements in Iowa history.
    • The Iowa State University Library Special Collections [3] maintains a number of collections which focus on the university's scientific and technological roles.
    • The home page of the State Historical Society of Iowa [4] describes its programs, services, and publications. It includes information on grants administered by the Society.
  • United States and International
    • The University of Illinois [5] Archives has developed an excellent collection related to student life with a special emphasis on fraternities and sororities.
    • The Archives Division of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin [6] maintains a wide-ranging website of information from throughout the state.
    • The National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections [7] of the Library of Congress has recently begun to make some of its information available online.
    • The National Archives and Records Administration [8] (NARA) is experimenting with a fax-on-demand service that can deliver online or by fax a variety of general information about NARA holdings, services, and facilities.
    • A great deal of information about the Smithsonian Institution Libraries [9] is now available on-line.
    • Tulane University [10] has developed a master list of pointers to information about archives on the Internet.
    • The University of Idaho [11] has developed an excellent international directory [12] to archival and manuscripts collections.
  • Special Interest Sites
    • Those interested in the Holocaust should check the Archives of the Holocaust Museum [13].
    • Joconde [14] provides access to the collection records and a limited number of images in over 60 French museums. The database includes records of designs, prints, paintings, sculptures, photographs, and art objects representing over 130,000 art works and 10,000 artists.
    • The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation [15] offers a well-linked and highly-informative look at life in an early American city.
