Newspapers and Other News Sources

The library subscribes to about 20 print newspapers including papers from selected Iowa and U.S. cities, as well as some international newspapers. The Newspaper Collection is located on the 1st floor of the Library, near the MultiService Center. Copies of some newspapers also are kept behind the desk at the MultiService Center. Backfiles of some  newspapers are available on microfilm. The Library provides access to the content of numerous U.S. and international newspapers in electronic format.

  • Des Moines Register (ProQuest)
    Includes the full text of the newspaper from November 27, 2002 to the present.
     
  • LexisNexis Academic
    Includes the full text of over 350 international and U.S. newspapers, with extensive backfiles.
     
  • Newspaper Source (EBSCO)
    Cover-to-cover full text of 25 U.S. and international newspapers, and selected text for over 260 regional U.S. newspapers. Also includes full-text television and radio news transcripts.
     
  • PressDisplay (NewspaperDirect)
    Full-color, full-page displays of over 400 U.S. and international newspapers in English and other languages. Includes 60-day backfiles. Selected SmartNavigation titles can be translated into English or one of several major languages.
     
  • Ethnic NewsWatch
    Full text of over 250 newspapers and other publications from the ethnic, minority, and native press. Includes U.S. regional and national titles. Some publications in Spanish.
     
  • New York Times (1851-2005): ProQuest Historical Newspapers
    Includes full-text and full image articles since its beginning year. Display the complete image of any page in any issue or browse individual issues page by page. Recent full text articles from the New York Times can be found in either Lexis/Nexis Academic or America's Newspapers (Newsbank) databases.
     
  • New York Times Index
    Free access to citations and abstracts for articles appearing in the New York Times 1851-1980 and 1981-present.
     
  • Wall Street Journal (ProQuest)
    Includes the full text of the newspaper from January 2, 1984 to the present.
      
  • Electronic Newspapers
    Links to recommended directories of electronic newspapers. Those marked UNI are accessible only by University faculty, staff, and students with a current ID card. Newspaper pages may provide access only to current content, although archives are available in some cases.
     
  • Other News Sources
    Links to selected state, national, and international Web sites for news services, news magazines, and radio and TV networks.
