Employee Spotlight

Rod Library's faculty and staff are actively involved in research, writing articles, presenting at conferences, participating in regional and national committees, and serving as experts in our field. Here are just some of the great activities in which we are involved.

Dave Hoing's two part short story, "Plainview," a literary piece loosely based on the real-life unsolved murders of three girls in and near Waverly in the 1970s, will be reprinted in The Interrogator and Other Criminally Good Fiction.  Other authors in the collection include Joyce Carrol Oates, David Morrell, Michael Connelly, Lee Child, and even Mickey Spillane.  The book will be released in late November or early December.  "Plainview" was originally published in December 2010 in the British magazine Crimewave 11: Ghosts.

Dave Hoing's short story collection Tales of Earth was released the week before Thanksgiving.  The collection contains twenty-five previously published short stories, covering a wide array of genres, plus one new story and one essay.

Several of Dave Hoing's short stories have been published recently. Dave's short story "Mercy" was published in this month's issue of the online Frontier Tales Magazine. The magazine also published Dave's "The Dead-Line" a few months ago. Both stories are examples of flash fiction, a popular genre also known as short-short stories.

Clint Wrede and Richard Featherstone (Interim Department Head of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology) have had their article "Striking Out on Its Own:  The Divergence of Criminology and Criminal Justice from Sociology" accepted for publication in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Criminal Justice Education.  Congratulations, Clint!

Kate Martin has been appointed to the State Library's Library Services Advisory Panel that will provide input on the reorganization of library services in Iowa mandated under the 2010-2011 educational appropriations bill.

Elaine Chen presented a poster session titled "Current Trends in Library Website Design with Drupal CMS" at UNI's Scholars in Action Symposium sponsored by the Office of Sponsored Programs in February 2011. The Library has been awarded a $220,981 grant by the Roy J. Carver Memorial Trust for the re-furbishing of the Youth Collection and the enhancement of its resources. The grant application was prepared by Yolanda Hood, Kate Martin, Marilyn Mercado, and Sandra Wilkens.

Dr. Alan Asher, Art & Music Librarian, and Dr. Yolanda Hood, Youth Collection Librarian, will serve as primary instructors for the University's first-year Cornerstone course in 2011-2012. Dr. Asher also will serve as chair of one of the course clusters.

Chris Neuhaus, Reference Librarian and Bibliographer, served on the Thesis Committee for Lee J. Geisinger. The thesis “An Occupational Analysis of Digital Prepress in the Des Moines and Eastern Iowa Regions” was successfully defended on March 10, 2011.
