April 2009 Student of the Month
Melissa is a senior Religion and Asian Studies major who has worked in the Art & Music Collection for 2 years. Melissa’s responsibilities include assisting patrons, shelving and shelf reading, and the circulation of art and music materials. Melissa’s nominator noted that she “demonstrates excellent problem solving skills, volunteers to work on special projects, and provides outstanding service to the patrons...”
This is the third library Melissa has worked at. When she was a senior in high school her father encouraged her to apply for a job at the public library. She found that she loved the work and now plans study toward a Master of Library Science after graduating from UNI in December ‘09. Melissa noted that her favorite thing about working at the library is helping patrons find what they need and learning something for herself in the process. Someday in the future, she hopes to work as director of a rural library and has a special interest in providing delivery services to patrons.
Melissa is from Bettendorf, Iowa. She has one sister who is a graduate student at the University of Iowa. She also has numerous pets at her parent’s home and one cat here, in Cedar Falls. In her free time she enjoys arts and crafts and has recently begun learning the art of Chinese paper cutting. She and her fiancé, a math education major, plan to marry in Spring 2010 and settle in an area where he can teach while she attends a library graduate program and, no doubt, continues to share her talents with another fortunate library. Thanks Melissa, and congratulations on being April Student of the Month!
