April 2013 Student of the Month

Emily April 2013 Student of the Month

Emily is the Rod Library’s Student of the Month for April 2013. Emily is from Aurora, Iowa, and is pursuing an Elementary Education degree, with a minor in Literacy. She says she can’t pinpoint when she decided on a teaching career, just that she has wanted to teach for as long as she can remember. First the good news: Emily is a senior and will begin her student teaching phase this fall in Omaha, which means she will be one step closer to making her career aspirations a reality. Now the bad news: Emily is a senior and will begin her student teaching phase this fall in Omaha, which means the library will be losing a great student assistant at the end of the summer. Our loss, however, is the teaching profession’s gain!

Emily has worked at the Rod Library for two years, starting at the Multiservice Center. She now works at Circulation and has proven herself extremely valuable as a building monitor. Emily’s Student-of-the-Month nominator praised Emily’s ability to handle the considerable responsibility that comes with being a building monitor. Emily states that helping patrons, and getting to know many of them in the process, is her favorite part of the job. Her least favorite part? Shelving. Isn’t shelving one of the torments in Dante’s fifth circle? Anyway, Emily knows accurate shelving is a vital task in maintaining the library. She simply straps on her iPod and works hard to get the job done. Emily says she likes working in the library because the location is convenient, the hours are flexible, and she feels she is learning a lot that can be applied to her teaching career.

Away from her job and studies, Emily likes to hang out with friends and family. Emily says she is a “summer person” who likes to be outdoors. She also enjoys biking, to the extent that she completed the entire RAGBRAI route last summer. After graduation, Emily is hoping to find a teaching opportunity somewhere in the Midwest. Wherever her career takes her, we know she will do very well. Thanks for being such a good employee, Emily, and congratulations for being chosen April 2013 Rod Library Student of the Month.
