Student of the Month Award
June 2014 Student of the Month
Anna

Anna is the Rod Library’s Student of the Month for June 2014. Anna’s hometown is Cedar Falls. She graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in women’s and gender studies. Normally this would be bittersweet for the library because as much as we love to see our students succeed in school and move on in their careers, we hate to lose great student assistants such as Anna. The good news for us is that Anna will begin work on a master’s degree in history right here at UNI starting this fall, so she will continue to work at the library during her graduate program. Anna originally came to UNI with an eye toward a business major, but after taking a humanities class she found her true passion and switched her major to history, a victory for the liberal arts. Historia vitae magistra.

Anna has been working at the library in the Access Services Department for two years. Her duties include working at the Circulation and Multiservice Center desks. Anna says she likes working the desks because it gives her a chance to interact with patrons. Anna is also a member of the Rod Library Public Relations committee. One of the PR activities she really enjoys is maintaining the Rod Library presence on Tumblr. Anna was also the driving force behind the Rod Library’s first-ever Mini ComicCon, which took place this past March. According to Anna, the process of putting the event together and seeing the results of all the hard work was an awesome experience that wouldn’t have happened without the support and enthusiasm of many other library staff members. Through it all, however, Anna was at the forefront of making the Mini ComicCon a reality. As one of her Student-of-the-Month nominators wrote, “She is committed to the success of events for which she is responsible. When planning the Mini ComiCon she took a leadership role and personally contacted artists for artists’ alley. She invited President Ruud to be a judge and worked with other campus faculty members on their contributions to the event. Anna was involved in every phase of planning and execution of the event.” Thanks to those efforts, the inaugural Mini ComicCon was an unqualified success that highlighted the Rod Library at its best.

Away from her job and studies, Anna likes to read and do things with her daughter, such as bike riding and fishing. For now her plans are focused on completing her master’s program. She says she is open to any career opportunities that might come along, and she also remains open to the possibility of pursuing a Ph.D at some point. For now, the Rod Library is very happy to have Anna remain with us as an outstanding student assistant. Wherever her career takes her, we know she will be successful. Thanks for being such a good employee, Anna, and congratulations for being chosen June 2014 Rod Library Student of the Month.

In an effort to honor outstanding student employees, the Student Employment Advisory Committee elects a "Student of the Month" from submitted nominations. The award is intended to recognize a student employee who displays exemplary performance in areas of his/her employment: attitude, judgement in a particular situation, high level of service to patrons, etc.

Anyone may nominate a student of the month: library staff, student workers, university staff, students, or the public. To nominate an employee for this award, complete the nomination form [doc] and send it to the Rod Library Student Employment Coordinator, campus mail code 3675, or submit it electronically.
