Banned Book Week

Monday, September 28, 2015 - 1:25pm - We celebrate Banned Books Week each year to bring attention to books that have been challenged, restricted, or banned, and to highlight the importance of even the most controversial texts. Many of the books you'll see featured this week haven't actually been banned. They've been challenged or otherwise targeted for removal, but they've remained on shelves in the long run after communities followed their own challenge policies and allowed for advocacy and discussion. Robert Tabor's The Four Seasons formal reception

Friday, September 25, 2015 - 1:00am -   CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's Rod Library is the new home to four donated paintings. Edna Shain of Vinton has given four art pieces, collectively titled "The Four Seasons," to the Rod Library to be displayed on the ground floor adjacent to the UNI Museum. The paintings are by the late Iowa artist Robert Tabor and were created in 1952. Tabor was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) muralist, and one of his murals still hangs in the lobby of the U.S. Post Office in Independence. Shain is a retired insurance company executive and previous owner of Lane Insurance Company in Independence, where the paintings were displayed. She chose to relocate the... Read More

Copyright Reminder

Monday, September 14, 2015 - 6:00am - Just a friendly reminder about the fair use while using the copying or scanning equipment in the Rod Library. Fair use indicates that you can make:  One copy of one article per issue of a periodical.  One copy of one chapter per book if the book is divided into chapters, or one copy of 10% of the book if it is not divided into chapters. One copy of 10% of a piece of music.  One copy of one poem per book, up to 250 lines.  One copy of no more than two pages from a children's book.  One copy of one photograph, chart, or graph per book, unless these are within the context of an article or chapter and the entire text of the article is copied as well; then we can make one copy... Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off

Monday, September 7, 2015 - 6:00am - On September 15th, from 4-7pm the Rod Library will be hosting a Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff to celebrate all things Hispanic and Latino. We will feature performances by Salsa Cedar Falls, IDT Dance Company, and the campus Capoeira group. There will be free food as well, along with crafts and a piñata! At the end of the evening we'll be screening the first episode of Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, to kick off our year long series of programs celebrating  Latinos and Latino culture.
