Building Description
- Rod Library is a square building with four floors.
- Patrons enter the library on the second or main floor level from the east entrance or the west entrance. The main thoroughfare in the building runs between the east and west entrances.
- The main floor is a High Sound floor to encourage collaboration in studying and learning. Each floor has a different sound level designation based on the type of work encouraged on that floor.
- Collections are located on the first, third, and fourth floors primarily, with two small collections located on the main floor.
Elevators and Stairs
- Elevators are located in the center of the building and stop on all four floors
- All stairwells allow access to each floor:
- Main stairwell, located on the east side of the building, just inside the entrance.
- Stairwell on the north side, center of the building.
- Stairwell on the west side, center of the building.
- Stairwell on the south side, center of the building.
Major Features on the Main or Second Floor
- Library Services Desk is located by the east entrance, next to the Tech Connect Desk.
- Library partners of the Office of Academic Advising, Undergraduate Studies, and The Learning Center located in the north and south center of the building.
- The Book Bistro is near the west entrance.
- The Newspapers Collection and Cedar Falls Public Library Collection are located near the Book Bistro.
- Meeting rooms on north side, with MakerSpace and Library Instruction room in the northeast corner.
- Two study rooms, one being the Anatomy Room, located by the main stairwell.
- Technology on this floor consists of The Panther Print Station, which includes black and white printer, a color printer, and KIC scanners; Visitor Kiosk computer station and Visitor Pod of four computers; docking stations for personal laptops, and the Assistive Technology computer stations, all located in the southeast corner.
- The Self-checkout station is located by the west entrance.
Restrooms and Water Fountains
- Two men’s, three women’s, and one single occupancy accessible restroom are located on this floor. One set of men’s and women’s is located on the east side to the north of the main stairwell. The second set is located on the west side just south of the west stairwell. The single occupancy accessible restroom is located on the south side near the south stairwell. Additional accessible restrooms are located on the fourth floor.
- There are six drinking fountains located on this floor. One is located by each of the north, east and west stairwells, one by the elevators in the center of the floor, one by the Whiteboard Wall on the south side of the floor, and one by the Dean’s Office in the southeast corner of the floor.
- Bottle filling stations are drinking fountains near the east and west restrooms and by the Whiteboard Wall.
Major Features on First Floor
- First floor is a Medium Sound floor to accommodate silent learning or some collaborative work.
- UNI Museum and Digital Scholarship Unit are located in the southeast corner.
- Periodicals are located on the western half of first floor.
- Index and Abstracts are located in the southwest corner.
- United States Government Documents is located between the north stairwell and main stairwell.
- Maps and Atlases are located in the northeast corner.
- Microforms are located on the east side near the main stairwell.
- The Panther Print Station, with a black and white printer, is located south of the Government Documents.
- Vending machines are located directly behind the main stairwell.
Restrooms and Water Fountains
- Two men’s and women’s restrooms are located on this floor. One set is located on the east side to the north of the main stairwell. The second set is located on the west side just south of the west stairwell. Note that accessible restrooms are located on the fourth floor and one on the second floor near the south stairwell.
- Two single occupancy restrooms are located on the south side across from the south stairwell. Note that accessible restrooms are located on the fourth floor and one on the second floor near the south stairwell.
- There are five drinking fountains located on this floor. One is located by each of the north, south, east, and west stairwells, and one by the elevators in the center of the floor.
- A bottle filling station is on the drinking fountain near the east restrooms.
Major Features on the Third Floor
- Third floor is a Medium Sound floor to accommodate silent learning or some collaborative work.
- Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning spaces and offices, north side near the main stairwell.
- Special Collections and University Archives, located in the northwest corner of the floor.
- Library Research and User Services faculty offices are located near the main stairwell, to the east and south.
- Stacks Circulating Collection, call numbers A-J, with A call numbers beginning in the southeast corner and J ending in the southwest corner.
- Stacks Oversized Collection, call numbers A-J, located near the west restrooms and west stairwell in the center of the building.
- Study rooms and the Listening and Viewing Room are located in the north east corner by the main stairwell and the south central area near the south stairwell.
- One Library instruction room is located in the west central area near the west stairwell. The second Library instruction room is located in the far northeast corner of the floor near the conference room.
- The ScholarSpace presentation room is located on the east side of the floor diagonal from the main stairwell.
- The Panther Print Station, with a black and white printer and self-checkout station, is located across from the main stairwell with the Visitor Kiosk computer station.

- Two men’s and women’s restrooms are located on this floor. One set is located on the east side to the north of the main stairwell. The second set is located on the west side just south of the west stairwell. Note that accessible restrooms are located on the fourth floor and one on the second floor near the south stairwell.
- There are five drinking fountains located on this floor. One is located by each of the north, south, east, and west stairwells, and one by the elevators in the center of the floor.
- Bottle filling stations are drinking fountains near the west restrooms and by the south stairwell.
Major Features on Fourth Floor
- Fourth floor is the silent floor.
- Study rooms and meeting rooms are located in the northwest corner, north central, northeast corner, and south central.
- Stacks Circulating Collection, call numbers K-Z, with K call numbers beginning in the southeast corner and Z ending in the northwest corner.
- Stacks Oversized Collection, call numbers K-Z, located in the northwest corner.
- Videos and DVD’s are located on the east central between the LC’s.
- Fine and Performing Arts Collection is located west of the north stairwell (near room 442).
- Mindfulness Space is located in the northwest corner and is numbered Room 437 (next to room 436).
- The Panther Print Station, with a black and white printer, is located near the main stairwell. The Visitor Kiosk computer station is located in the center of the floor across from the Fine and Performing Arts Collection.
